Leading the Way in Sustainable Production: Our Move to HVO and the Launch of Our New 4.8kW HVO Generator

HVO Generator

At Get Set Hire, sustainability is built into how we operate, not just something we talk about. Over the past few years, we have transitioned from traditional diesel-powered vehicles to a fleet powered entirely by Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) and electric vehicles (EVs). This shift has had a significant impact, reducing our carbon emissions by an impressive 80% in 2024 alone.

As a trusted supplier to the film and TV production industry in London and beyond, we know how important it is to keep productions running smoothly and sustainably. We are proud to say that we are not only keeping up with the green revolution, but we are helping to lead it.

What Is HVO and Why Does It Matter?

Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) is a renewable diesel alternative made from waste fats, oils, and greases. It burns significantly cleaner than standard diesel and can be used in most modern diesel engines without modification.

HVO is often referred to as a “bridge fuel,” meaning it helps reduce emissions immediately while we continue building the infrastructure needed for a fully electrified future. While it may not be the ultimate long-term solution, it is one of the most impactful short-term steps available to lower carbon output.

The Film London Fuel Project: A Surprising Insight

To put our progress into perspective, we contributed data to Film London’s Fuel Project, an initiative that analysed the types of fuel being used by production suppliers across Greater London.

Key findings included:

  • Data from 165 suppliers revealed a fleet of around 3,200 vehicles.
  • 82% of those vehicles ran on diesel, making them immediately compatible with HVO.
  • Despite this, only 14% were actually using HVO fuel.

This means that while the majority of fleets could switch to HVO right now, very few are doing so. At Get Set Hire, we operate a fleet of just 12 vans, yet we account for 1 in every 20 vans on the road in the HVO-using segment. That is a statistic we are proud of and one that highlights how rare true sustainability leadership can be in our industry.

Bryony Harrison-Miller, Head of Sustainability, reflected:
“I was shocked that so few vehicles were running on HVO, because it is a relatively simple swap, although it does cost a little more than diesel on average. From a business perspective it illustrates to our clients our ongoing commitment to go the extra mile. We measure and offset our carbon footprint yearly, so this has helped keep that in check and reduces our offsetting costs.”

HVO Fuel Usage at Get Set Hire: 2021–2024

Since committing to a more sustainable fleet in 2021, we have made impressive progress in reducing our reliance on diesel and increasing our use of HVO fuel across our operations.

Yearly Breakdown:

  • 2021 – 0% HVO, 100% diesel. Our baseline year before transitioning.
  • 2022 – 42% HVO, 58% diesel. HVO adoption began, nearly matching our diesel spend.
  • 2023 – 68% HVO, 32% diesel. HVO usage surpassed diesel for the first time.
  • 2024 – 88% HVO, 12% diesel. Our fleet is now almost entirely HVO-fuelled.

At a Glance:

  • Diesel usage dropped from 100% in 2021 to just 12% in 2024.
  • HVO spend increased year-on-year, reflecting our confidence in renewable fuels.
  • This transition reduced our fleet emissions by 80% as of 2024, with further improvements expected in 2025 through more electrification and cleaner technology.
